Early life and background

Ashish Sakharkar was born on 18 November 1979 in Mumbai. Raised in a family with a bodybuilding background — his father competed as an amateur and won the Mr Maharashtra title — Sakharkar developed an early interest in fitness. He attended Hill Grange High School and later completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Sydenham College of Commerce & Economics. Although he passed the CA Level 1 examination, he chose to pursue bodybuilding rather than a career as a chartered accountant.

Career

Sakharkar began competing in bodybuilding in 1999, entering a local YMCA novice event after roughly six months of training and winning gold in his category. He went on to become one of India’s most decorated bodybuilders, winning the Mr India (Federation Cup) title four times and often competing in the 80 kg division.

On the international stage he earned medals across IFBB events, including gold at a European Championship, silver at an IFBB Mr Asia Championship, and silver and bronze medals at IFBB Mr Universe competitions. He also placed seventh at an Amateur Olympia event. In 2013 he competed at the Sheru Classic, though he did not medal there.

Sakharkar’s training routine was rigorous. He typically worked out twice a day, focusing on free weights such as barbells and dumbbells, and maintained a highly disciplined diet. During a competition preparation in 2011 he detailed a regimen that included very large portions of protein-rich foods and dry fruits, with meals distributed across the day to meet strict nutritional goals.

Alongside his competitive career, Sakharkar shared his knowledge as a gym trainer. In April 2021 he opened his own facility, Midtown Fitness, in Mumbai, continuing his engagement with the local fitness community.

Known by the nickname "The Expert," Sakharkar carried a prominent profile in Indian bodybuilding. He was noted for his physical measurements and stage presence, and he owned a Suzuki Hayabusa among his personal possessions. His personal life included marriage to Runali Sakharkar, a dietitian, and he was a father to two sons, one of whom is named Ayush. He followed Hinduism and identified with the Marathi community.
