Early life and background
Ashish Vidyarthi was born in Delhi and raised in a home that combined Malayali and Bengali heritage through his father and mother respectively. He completed his schooling in New Delhi, attending Shiv Niketan Public School and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s V M Public School, and went on to graduate from Hindu College with a BA in History (Honours). After finishing college he trained in acting at the National School of Drama and worked with several theatre groups, including Sambhav Theatre Group, Act One Group and Prithvi Theatre.

Career
Vidyarthi began appearing on screen in the early 1990s. His first television appearance came on DD National in 1990, and his earliest listed Hindi film role was in 1991. Over the following decades he has worked across a wide range of Indian film industries and in English-language projects, taking roles in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Odia, Marathi and Bangladeshi cinema.

He has become particularly well known for powerful supporting and negative roles. Notable Hindi films in which he has appeared include 1942: A Love Story, Drohkaal, Major Saab, Vaastav: The Reality, LOC: Kargil, R... Rajkumar and Kuttey. His Telugu film work includes titles such as Sreeram, Gudumba Shankar, Narasimhudu, Naayak and iSmart Shankar. Kannada credits include Kotigobba, Nandhi, Nammanna, Siddhartha and Pataki. His Tamil films include Thamizh, Ghilli, Azhagiya Tamil Magan and others, while Malayalam appearances include Chess, Rakshakan, Bachelor Party and Uriyattu. In Bengali and Odia cinema he has also been active, with films like Kalishankar and others to his credit.

Vidyarthi’s first appearances across various language cinemas are recorded in the 1990s and early 2000s: his early credited film debuts include a Hindi role in 1991, and later entries in Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, English, Tamil, Malayalam, Bangladeshi and Odia films. He has also worked in television serials and, more recently, in web series such as Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (2020), Sunflower (2021), TVF Pitchers season 2 (2022) and Rana Naidu (2023).

Across his career Vidyarthi has received national and regional recognition for his performances. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Drohkaal in 1995, and has taken honors including a Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Best Actor award, a Star Screen Award for Best Villain, a Filmfare Award for Best Villain (Telugu), and a Nandi Award for Best Character Actor. In 2023 he was recognized as Best Travel & Food Vlogger by Lokmat.

Beyond acting he founded a professional training and coaching institute called Avid Miner Conversations in 2014 and has established himself as a motivational speaker and leadership and creativity coach who visits educational institutions and corporate settings. He has one son, Arth Vidyarthi, born in November 2000. Professionally and personally he has been married more than once; his second marriage took place on 25 May 2023 to Rupali Barua.
