Ashok Chavan Biography

Ashokrao Shankarrao Chavan was born on 28 October 1958 in Nanded, Maharashtra. He is the son of Shankarrao Chavan, who served twice as Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Early life and background

Ashokrao Shankarrao Chavan was born on 28 October 1958 in Nanded, Maharashtra. He is the son of Shankarrao Chavan, who served twice as Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Chavan attended St. Xavier’s High School in Fort, Mumbai, finishing school in 1975, and went on to study at Hazarimal Jomani College in Mumbai and B.Y.K. College of Commerce in Pune. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science and a master’s degree in Business Management. He lists playing table tennis, reading, and travelling among his hobbies.

Career

Chavan entered public life through student leadership at the University of Pune and moved into mainstream politics with the Indian National Congress in the 1980s. He held early organisational roles in the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and served as a Member of Parliament from Nanded in 1987. Over the next decades he moved between state and national roles: he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1992, served as a minister of state with portfolios that included Public Works, Urban Development and Home, and later held full cabinet portfolios such as Revenue and Protocol in the Vilasrao Deshmukh ministry.

He was first elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Mudkhed in 1999 and later from Bhokar. Chavan was elevated to Leader of the House in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and was chosen to be Chief Minister of Maharashtra in December 2008, a role he retained into 2009 after the Congress–NCP alliance won the state assembly elections.

Across the 2000s he held a range of ministries, including Industries, Textiles, Mining, Marathi Language, Ex-Servicemen Welfare and State Border Defence, and earlier during the Sushilkumar Shinde government he was responsible for Co-operation, Public Health and Family Welfare, School Education, Water Supply and other departments. In 2014 he returned to the Lok Sabha representing Nanded. He served as President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee from 2015. In December 2019 he was appointed Minister of Public Works (excluding Public Undertakings) in the Uddhav Thackeray cabinet.

In February 2024 Chavan resigned his membership of the Indian National Congress and, the following day, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis.

Public profile

Chavan has had a long and high-profile political career, but it has included several controversies and legal disputes that have shaped public perceptions. Allegations and legal actions recorded in public sources include disputes over allocations of petrol pumps in the early 1990s, a land encroachment complaint connected to an educational society in Yavatmal, and accusations related to mining allocations. The Election Commission found Chavan guilty in 2014 of providing false information about election expenditures for the 2009 Maharashtra assembly elections.

One of the highest-profile controversies during his tenure was the Adarsh Housing Society matter in Mumbai, which led to his resignation as Chief Minister on 7 November 2009. Legal proceedings around that case continued for years, with various court and gubernatorial decisions affecting the prospect of prosecution; in December 2017 the Bombay High Court declared that Chavan was not entitled to be charged in that matter. Public records also list several criminal charges that were brought in connection with related allegations.

Personal life

Chavan married Ameeta Chavan in 1982. The couple have twin daughters, Srijaya and Sujaya. His parents are Shankarrao Chavan and Kusumbai Shankarrao Chavan. He holds Indian nationality and practices Hinduism. The family has business interests including holdings in sugar factories in Nanded and ownership of an LPG distribution company, along with other enterprises and assets disclosed in public affidavits.

Latest updates

Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Ashok Chavan resigned from the Congress party on 12 February 2024 and formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 13 February 2024. In public remarks at the time he said his long association with the Congress prompted him to explore other political options.

Chavan continues to be an active figure in Maharashtra politics after decades in elected office and ministerial roles, and his career remains a subject of public and judicial scrutiny.
