Early life and background

Ashok Selvan was born on 8 November 1989 in Chennimalai in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Brought up with ties to Chennai, he attended Santhome Higher Secondary School in Mylapore and later graduated from Loyola College, Chennai, completing a degree in Visual Communications. He has spoken about enjoying cricket and adventure activities such as skydiving in his free time.

Career

Selvan began his film journey working behind the camera during and after college, directing short films while a student and later assisting established filmmakers. One early screen opportunity came when a childhood photograph of his was used in the 2012 film Billa 2. He made his official film debut in the Tamil industry with Billa II (2012).

After appearing in character roles and working on set in various capacities, Selvan gained wider attention with a string of genre films. In 2013 he appeared in the black comedy Soodhu Kavvum, and later that year took the lead in the psychological thriller Pizza II: Villa as Jebin M. Jose, an English novelist at the centre of a mysterious villa-based plot. For that role he underwent a notable physical change to suit the character and received strong reviews for his performance.

The following year he starred as the detective Vetri in the murder mystery Thegidi (2014). Through the later 2010s he continued to choose varied projects, including Kootathil Oruthan and the survival drama Sila Samayangalil (2018), the latter of which was released on Netflix and reached the final round of consideration at the Golden Globes.

Selvan has also worked in web series and regional cinema outside Tamil. He made his Telugu film debut in Ninnila Ninnila (2021) and appeared in Malayalam cinema with Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham (2021). On streaming platforms he has been seen in the Amazon Prime Video series Time Enna Boss and the Netflix anthology Navarasa. In 2020 he produced and starred in Oh My Kadavule under his production banner Happy High Pictures; the film was a commercial success and brought him further recognition.

Beyond films, Selvan has taken part in television and reality programming to promote his work. He has appeared on talk and reality shows including Neeya Naana, Bigg Boss Tamil Season 2, and participated in Cooku with Comali (season 4) around the release of Por Thozhil.
