Early life and background

Ashok V. Vaswani was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in 1961. He grew up in the city formerly known as Bombay and completed a Bachelor of Commerce focused on economics and accountancy at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. He trained professionally as a chartered accountant and company secretary and has pursued executive education at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Vaswani has described leaving India as a young man with very limited funds and taking his first flight at 21. In his youth he had sporting ambitions as a spin bowler. His early family life included the loss of his father when he was young; his mother had hoped he would study medicine, but he chose a path in finance instead.

Career

Vaswani’s professional life spans several decades and multiple continents. His early international experience included a role as a management consultant at AF Ferguson Enterprises in Virginia from 1985 to 1987. He joined Citigroup in the late 1990s, taking on leadership responsibilities across Turkey, the Middle East and Africa beginning in June 1999, and moving into a marketing director position for the CEMEA region in November 2000. Over time he rose to senior leadership at Citigroup, serving as CEO for Citigroup Asia Pacific and as a member of Citigroup’s Global Operating and Management Committees.

In June 2007 Vaswani became a partner at Brysam Global Partners in New York, a position he held until February 2010. He joined Barclays in October 2010 and over the next decade held chief executive roles across the bank’s businesses, demonstrating a record of building and scaling teams, forming partnerships, and applying technology to retail banking strategies. He remained with Barclays until April 2019.

Beyond those executive roles, Vaswani has taken on industry and board responsibilities. From April 2012 to November 2013 he chaired the Retail Committee at the British Bankers’ Association. In June 2021 he was appointed a non-executive director at the London Stock Exchange Group. In July 2022 he became president of Pagaya Technologies Limited, a U.S.-Israeli company focused on artificial intelligence.

In late 2023 Kotak Mahindra Bank’s board appointed Vaswani as a Director, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank for a three-year term beginning 1 January 2024. That appointment followed regulatory approval by the Reserve Bank of India. The role marked a return to India after more than three decades working in international banking.
