Early life and backgroundRaman Ashok Kumar, who worked under the screen name Ashokan, was born in 1962 in Varkala, in what was then Madras. He spent his formative years in that region before entering the Malayalam film industry. He later lived at Bharat Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram and spent a period living and working in Singapore with his family.
Career
Ashokan began his film career after completing his formal education by working as an assistant director to the late filmmaker J. Sasikumar. He moved into directing by the late 1980s and made his feature directorial debut with the 1989 film Varnam, which starred Jayaram, Ranjini and Suresh Gopi.
During the early 1990s he directed several commercially successful and well-received films, including Saandhram (1990), Mookkilla Rajyathu (1991), and Aacharyan (1993). Saandhram was co-directed with Thaha and featured Suresh Gopi and Parvathy in leading roles, while Aacharyan was written by journalist–scriptwriter B. Jayachandran. Ashokan frequently collaborated with actor Suresh Gopi across many of his projects.
Mookkilla Rajyathu, released in 1991, is among the works for which Ashokan is best remembered; it is regarded as one of the notable Malayalam comedies of its era and featured actors such as Thilakan, Jagathy Sreekumar and Mukesh.
In addition to his theatrical films, Ashokan directed telefilms. His telefilm Kanappurangal earned him the Kerala State Film Award for best director. Another television film he directed, Melody of Loneliness (2003), was also honoured by the Government of Kerala with a state award.
Later life
After a period of activity in cinema, Ashokan stepped away from filmmaking and established a software company based in Singapore. He managed that company as a director while living with family members abroad; the business carried out work in the Gulf region and in Kochi, India. Reports indicate that he relocated from Chennai to Singapore following his marriage.

Ashokan worked mainly in the Malayalam film industry and accumulated credits on more than 130 Malayalam films over the course of his career. He was known for directing commercially successful and critically acknowledged projects, and for his collaborations with prominent Malayalam actors of his generation.
Personal life
Ashokan was married to Sita. The couple had a daughter, Abhirami, who is a PhD scholar. He had black hair and black eyes. He held Indian nationality and considered Varkala his hometown.
Death
Ashokan died on 26 September 2022 in Kochi at the age of 60. He had been suffering from multiple health issues and had been staying in Singapore during his final period, returning to India for medical treatment in Kochi.
