Early life and background

Ashoke Pandit was born on 11 May 1966 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and was raised in a Kashmiri Pandit family. He spent his formative years in Mumbai and became involved in theatre while at college. That early stage experience included acting and directing for stage productions and led to sponsorship from the Indian People’s Theatre Association.

Career

Pandit’s career spans documentary filmmaking, television direction, feature film production and public speaking. He began making Hindi documentaries that examined the experiences of Kashmiri Pandit refugees; titles credited to him include Kashmiri Pandit Refugees, Sharnarthi Apne Desh Mein, And The World Remained Silent and A Village of Widows. His documentaries have been screened at festivals such as the International Film Festival of India in Goa, the Pune International Film Festival and Mumbai’s MAMI, and one of his films received a standing ovation at the House of Commons in London.

Before directing his first feature, Pandit worked in television in the 1980s as an associate director on the series Filmi Chakkar. He went on to direct a number of Hindi television programmes, including Hanste Khelte (1997), Colgate Top 10 (1998) and Tere Mere Sapne (2009). His debut as a film director came with Sheen in 2004. In 2019 he served as a co-producer on the Hindi film The Accidental Prime Minister.

Pandit has been recognised for his documentary work. In 1999 he won an award from the Radio and TV Advertising Practitioners’ Association of India for Sharnarthi Apne Desh Mein, and in 2010 he received the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Documentary for A Village of Widows.
