Ashwani Kumari was born on 25 August 1997 in Govindpur, a neighbourhood of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, India. She grew up in a middle-class family and attended Vivek Vidyalaya in Govindpur through the 10th standard before finishing higher secondary education at Vidya Bharati Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Jamshedpur. Later she studied at Indira Gandhi National Open University, where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting between 2019 and 2022.

From childhood she showed a keen interest in cricket. She began playing informally around age 12 with boys in her neighbourhood and trained initially in Ghorabandha under coach Kajal Das. Early financial constraints meant she often borrowed equipment to practice and play in tournaments. As her game developed she moved to train and play at Shaheed Nirmal Mahato Stadium in Jamshedpur.

Career

Ashwani is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast-medium. She progressed through Jharkhand’s age-group system and was selected in the Jharkhand Under-19 squad, although she did not get an opportunity to play for the team at that stage. Under the guidance of Jharkhand state coach Umesh she worked on her batting and began to open the innings, a change that proved pivotal for her career.

Her performances in domestic T20 competitions brought her wider recognition. In the Senior Women’s T20 Championship she produced eye-catching innings, including scores of 84 off 50 balls and 95 off 55 balls in two different matches. Those displays led to selection for the East Zone side, where she continued to make contributions such as a quickfire 65 against Central Zone.

Ashwani has represented Jharkhand at senior level and has also been involved with India D team matches and the Challengers Trophy in 2021. In state-level T20 competition she turned out for Dumka Daisies Women in the 2022 BYJU’S Jharkhand Women’s T20 Trophy, a campaign that earned recognition at state level.
