Early life and background

Ashwin Kaushal, born on 22 February in Mumbai, grew up in a family connected to the film world. His father, Kaushal Bharti, was a director and writer and his mother is Bina Kaushal. He completed schooling at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai and attended Mithibhai College. Ashwin’s sister Tanushree Kaushal is also an actress.

During his school years he struggled academically and was homeschooled after repeated failures in class. He has described difficulty concentrating during that period and did not pass his 10th examination. His father died on 16 January 1995 at the age of 87.

Career

Ashwin Kaushal’s screen career began on television. He made his TV debut in 1987 with the Doordarshan series Aurat, in which he worked alongside actors such as Mandira Bedi, Aman Verma and Surendra Pal. He moved into films with an early credited role in Damini (1993) and went on to appear in a string of Hindi features through the 1990s, including Kartvaya (1995), Barsaat (1995), Ghulam-e-Mustafa (1997), Sardari (1997), Chandaal (1998), Safari (1999) and Madam Don (1999).

After a break from film acting, he returned in 2002 in Mulaqaat, a project that featured Jackie Shroff and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Over the following decades he continued to take supporting roles, appearing as a metro passenger in the 2014 film PK and in the 2018 film Baaghi 2. He also played a father figure on the Disney television series Goldy Ahuja Matric Pass (2015), sharing screen time with child actor Namit Shah.

Kaushal has been active across television and digital platforms, with credits in series such as Fire and Ice (2015), Tashan-e-Ishq (2016), Tu Aashiqui (2017), The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family (2018), Belan Wali Bahu (2018), Chutzpah (2021) and the ZEE5 web series Sunflower (2021), in which he played the character Mr Raj Kapoor.

Beyond acting, he has worked behind the camera as a writer and director. He wrote stories for horror shows including Madhumati (1994), Mano Ya Na Mano (2006) and contributed to Fear Files: Darr Ki Sacchi Tasvirein.
