Ashwin Mushran was born on 19 May 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in the city he also counts Dehradun among his formative schooling locations; his education includes Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and The Doon School in Dehradun. He went on to study English literature at Hindu College, Delhi, and completed a postgraduate diploma in performing arts at Drama Studio London.

Mushran comes from a family with a Kashmiri Pandit father and a mother of mixed English and German heritage. His parents are Viney Kumar and Linnet (also known as Minakshi Mushran). He is married to Rebbeca Maria Vaz and the couple have a daughter, Aarya Mushran.

Following his training in London, Mushran returned to India and became active on the Mumbai theatre circuit. Early screen work included a television commercial that led to a role behind and in front of the camera on the sketch comedy series The Great Indian Comedy Show in 2004.
