Early life and background

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari was born on 15 October 1979 in Mulund, Mumbai. She grew up in the city and attended St Mary’s Convent School before completing her graduation from SIES College of Commerce and Economics. During her college years at Sophia Polytechnic she earned a gold medal in commercial arts, an early recognition of her creative talents.

Career

Ashwiny spent the first part of her professional life in advertising. She worked for about 15 years at the agency Leo Burnett in India and rose to the role of Executive Creative Director. Her advertising work won several industry honors, including Cannes Lions, New York Festival, One Show, Promax and Goafest awards.

She moved into filmmaking with a short film, What’s for Breakfast, in 2012. Her first feature as a director was Nil Battey Sannata (2016), a film that traveled internationally under the title The New Classmate. She also directed a Tamil remake of the same story titled Amma Kanakku. Nil Battey Sannata starred Swara Bhaskar and was produced by Colour Yellow Productions.

In 2017 she directed the romantic comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi, a commercial success that earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Director in 2018. The film’s success led to a two-film deal with Balaji Motion Pictures.

Ashwiny continued to build a varied filmography. In 2018 she directed Panga, starring Kangana Ranaut, Neena Gupta, Richa Chadda and Jassie Gill; the film released on 24 January 2020 and received critical praise. In 2021 she directed a web series titled BreakPoint about the tennis partnership of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi for Earthsky Pictures, a production company she co-founded with her husband Nitesh Tiwari in March 2018. Under Earthsky Pictures she has also directed several advertisement films and announced work on a documentary about N. R. Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy.

In addition to film and television, Ashwiny published her debut fiction novel Mapping Love on 1 August 2021. She has also produced feature films, including the young-adult comedy-drama Bas Karo Aunty!, announced in May 2022 and set to feature Ishwak Singh and Mahima Makwana.
