Early life and background

Asish Mohapatra was born in 1980 and grew up in Cuttack, Orissa. He attended SCB Medical Public School in Cuttack for his secondary education and completed higher secondary studies at Ravenshaw College. He went on to earn a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and later completed an MBA at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.

His family includes his mother, Mishra Kuku, who was an IIT graduate and worked as a college physics teacher, and a sister, Snigdha Mohapatra. Asish lists Bengali, Hindi, English and Oriya among the languages he speaks.

Career

Mohapatra began his professional life after graduating from IIT Kharagpur, joining ITC Ltd. in March 2002. During his time at ITC he moved into operations and managed a large team. He left ITC in 2005 to pursue his MBA and after completing it joined McKinsey & Company, where he concentrated on the healthcare sector and advised multinational and domestic clients in pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and pharma support services.

While at McKinsey he met his future wife, Ruchi Kalra. In 2010 he joined Matrix Management Corporation as a senior associate and served on boards across healthcare and other portfolio companies.

In late 2015 Mohapatra left Matrix to found OfBusiness (OFB Tech Pvt. Ltd), a platform designed to offer credit and other services to small and medium enterprises. The early days were challenging—his fundraising pitch was declined dozens of times—but OfBusiness grew rapidly. In July 2021 the company reached unicorn status after a funding round led by SoftBank Group Corp., which valued the business at roughly $1.5 billion.

In 2016 Mohapatra and a small team launched Oxyzo as an offshoot to provide purchase financing to SMEs. Oxyzo also became a unicorn in 2022. Beyond these ventures, he has held directorships and nominee director roles across multiple companies, including Meditrina Hospitals Pvt. Ltd., Oagriva Alliance Private Limited, Oxyzo Financial Services Private Limited, Ofb Tech Private Limited, Ofg Manufacturing Businesses Private Limited, Omat Business Private Limited and Samruddhi Organic Farm (India) Private Limited.

In November 2020 he was licensed as an Independent Director by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.
