Early life and backgroundGovardhan Asrani was born on 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, India. Raised in a Sindhi Hindu family, he attended St. Xaviers School in Jaipur and went on to graduate from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. From an early age he showed little interest in his family’s carpet business and gravitated toward the performing arts, eventually training in acting with Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar and later at the Film Institute in Pune, where he was both a student and, in later years, an acting teacher.
Career
Asrani made his film debut in 1967 with the Hindi movie Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiyaan. Over the course of a long and industrious career he worked as an actor and director and also contributed as a singer. He directed films including the Gujarati title Amdavad No Rikshawalo (1974) and the Hindi film Chala Murari Hero Banne (1977). As a singer he performed the song "O Rama Darr Lage" for the 1977 film Alaap.
In the early phase of his career Asrani appeared as a lead actor in several Gujarati films. He went on to become a prolific character actor in Hindi cinema, appearing in an extremely large number of films across the 1970s and 1980s. According to records of his work, he featured in more than 100 films during the 1970s and again delivered a similar volume of appearances in the 1980s, building a body of work that included collaborations with established directors such as Hrishikesh Mukherjee and B. R. Chopra.
Asrani formed close working relationships with several contemporaries. His friendship with Rajesh Khanna developed after their collaboration on Bawarchi (1972) and led to many further projects together. He also maintained a long professional presence in the industry, working across roughly fifty years and contributing to popular films under a variety of filmmakers.
Public profile
Asrani was a recognizable presence both on and off screen. He stood about 165 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall and was commonly described with brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. Off camera he enjoyed watching films, reading, and writing scripts. He owned vehicles including an Audi Q7 and a Honda City.
Personal life
Asrani married Manju Bansal, known professionally as Manju Asrani, in 1973. The couple had one son, Naveen Asrani, who worked as a dentist in Ahmedabad. He was known to maintain ties with classmates and colleagues from the Film Institute in Pune, including Jaya Bachchan, for whom he reportedly completed certain rites at her wedding.
