Early life and background

Atanu Das was born on 5 April 1992 in Baranagar, West Bengal, and grew up in the same town. He attended Narendranath Vidyamandir in Baranagar from 1997 to 2009 and later studied at Vinayaka Mission University in Salem, Tamil Nadu, where he completed a BA (Hons). Das comes from a Bengali family and follows Hinduism. His parents are Amit Das and Arati Das, and he has a sister named Shreya Dey.

Career

Das began archery training as a teenager. His father enrolled him at the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur in 2008, and that same year he made his international debut. Early coaching came from Mithu Da; at the Tata Academy he trained under Korean coach Lim Chae Wong and later worked with coaches including Juan Carlos Holgado. He shoots right-handed and competes in recurve men’s individual and team events.

Over more than a decade of international competition, Das has built a substantial medal record across junior and senior competitions. His podium results include gold medals at events such as the Recurve Boys’ Team at the 33rd Junior National Archery Championships (2010), multiple victories at Asian Grand Prix stages and National Games, and individual golds at the Indoor Archery World Cup (2017) and an Archery World Cup stage (2021). He has also been part of gold-winning mixed team performances at the Archery World Cup (2021) and has continued to collect national-level honours, including an individual gold at the National Games (2022).

Das’s silver medals span youth and senior-age competitions, from the World Archery Youth Championships and Youth World Championship team events in 2011 to team silver medals at World Cup stages and the Asian Games (2022). Bronze medals for Das include podium finishes at multiple Asian Archery Grand Prix events, Archery World Cup stages across several years, and at the Asian Outdoor Championships.

A notable turning point in his career came in 2013, when he and fellow Indian archer Deepika Kumari earned a World Cup bronze in Colombia. He was selected to represent India at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the recurve men’s individual event. National recognition for his achievements has included the Arjuna Award in 2020 and being named The Times of India TOISA Archer of the Year in 2021.
