Early life and background

Athiya Shetty was born on 5 November 1992 in Mumbai into a family with strong ties to the Indian film industry. She grew up in Mumbai and attended Cathedral and John Connon School before continuing her schooling at the American School of Bombay. From an early age she showed an interest in performance and sports, participating in school plays and playing football, basketball and badminton.

Wanting to prepare for a career in film, Athiya went to the New York Film Academy where she completed a program in filmmaking and liberal arts. While in New York she also worked in roles connected to design, including stints involving interior design, fashion design and work at a café. She trained in dance under choreographer Remo D’Souza to develop her skills for a career in entertainment.

Career

Athiya made her feature film debut as the female lead in Hero (2015). The film introduced her to mainstream Hindi cinema and earned her recognition as a new performer; she received the Best Female Debut award at the Filmfare Awards for her performance. Following her debut she became a brand ambassador for the Indian franchise of the cosmetics brand Maybelline.

She went on to appear in the ensemble comedy Mubarakan (2017), playing the role of a Punjabi character named Binkle Sandhu. The project featured several established actors and brought further visibility to her film work. In 2018 she appeared in the song ‘‘Tere Naal Nachna’’ for the film Nawabzaade. In 2019 she starred opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Motichoor Chaknachoor, continuing to build her filmography through leading roles.
