Early life and backgroundAtishi Singh, popularly known as Atishi Marlena, was born on 8 June 1981 in New Delhi. She grew up in the city and completed her schooling at Springdales School, New Delhi. She graduated with a degree in history from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in 2001 and went on to earn a master’s degree in history from Oxford University in 2003. From an early age she showed an interest in social work, education and public policy.
Career
Atishi joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2013 and became involved in shaping party policy during its formative phase. Early on she took on responsibilities as a party spokesperson and later served as a member of the party’s Political Affairs Committee, the party’s executive body.
Her work on education policy led to an appointment as Advisor on Education to Delhi’s then Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, a role she held from July 2015 until April 2018. She remained an important figure in AAP’s organisational structure and was given operational roles in election management, including serving as Lok Sabha in-charge for East Delhi in 2019.
Atishi contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from East Delhi but was not elected. She then contested the 2020 Delhi Assembly election from the Kalkaji constituency and won, defeating her Bharatiya Janata Party opponent Dharambir Singh. In March 2023 she was sworn in as a minister in the Delhi government. A few months later, in June 2023, she was given additional responsibility for the Finance and Revenue departments in the Delhi administration.
In September 2024 the Aam Aadmi Party announced her as Chief Minister of Delhi, making her the city’s eighth chief minister. She subsequently contested and won the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections from Kalkaji in February 2025, and shortly afterward resigned from the post of Chief Minister following AAP’s loss in the assembly polls.
Public profile
Atishi’s public work has centred on education and policy reform. Before entering full-time politics she taught and worked with NGOs, including a period of teaching English and history at the Rishi Valley School. She has also been involved in organic farming and grassroots education projects. During her time in public life she has been a visible campaigner for AAP and has appeared alongside senior party leaders while campaigning.
Her political career has also been accompanied by controversies and legal notices. She was removed from her advisory role in 2018 by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, a move that prompted differing narratives between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor’s office. During the 2019 election campaign a derogatory pamphlet circulated in East Delhi that targeted several AAP figures; the matter led to public accusations and denials. In 2024 the Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to her over a statement alleging that a rival party had approached her. In October 2024 she faced allegations related to occupancy of a government bungalow, and in January 2025 an FIR was registered accusing her of violating the Model Code of Conduct over the use of a government vehicle.
Personal life
Atishi is married to Pravin Singh. Her parents are Vijay Singh and Tripta Singh. Public records note that she does not have children. She follows Hinduism and is identified as belonging to a Punjabi Rajput background. She lists reading philosophy and psychology among her interests.
