Atlas Ramachandran Biography

Atlas Ramachandran was an Indian jeweller, film producer and actor best known for founding the Atlas Jewellery brand and for his work in Malayalam cinema.

Early life and background
Mathukkara Moothedath Ramachandran, commonly known as Atlas Ramachandran, was born on 31 July 1942 in Thrissur in what was then the Kingdom of Cochin (now Kerala). He completed a Bachelor of Commerce at St. Thomas College, Thrissur, and went on to earn a master’s degree in economic studies from the Delhi School of Economics. Ramachandran came from a Malayali family and was the third of eight children. His father, V. Kamalakara Menon, was a poet.

Career
Ramachandran began his professional life in banking after graduation, working with Canara Bank and later joining the State Bank of India as a probationary officer. He subsequently served at the State Bank of Travancore and rose to a supervisory role overseeing more than 100 branches. In 1974 he accepted a post as international division manager at the Commercial Bank of Kuwait.

While in Kuwait he identified a commercial opportunity in the regional jewellery market and launched his first Atlas jewellery showroom in Souk Al Watya in 1981. The shop quickly found customers and he expanded with additional outlets in Kuwait. After suffering business losses during the Gulf War in the 1990s, he moved operations to the United Arab Emirates, where he relaunched and promoted Atlas Jewellery with high-profile regional marketing initiatives and advertisements featuring himself as the brand’s public face.

Beyond retail, Ramachandran played a notable role in the Gulf jewellery industry’s trade bodies. He was elected the inaugural chairman of the Gold Promotion Committee for the Dubai Shopping Festival, a role he served for three years. He also served as secretary of the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group during its first six years and was a founding member of the Abu Dhabi Gold & Jewellery Group.

Film and media
Ramachandran expanded into film production and distribution through his company Chandrakanth Films. He produced several Malayalam films and was involved in distribution for a number of titles in the 1990s. His production credits include films such as Vasthuhara (1988), Vasthuhara and Dhanam (1991), and Sukrutham (1994). As a distributor, his credits include Innale (1990), Kauravar (1992), Venkalam (1993), and Chakoram (1994).

He also appeared on screen as an actor in Malayalam cinema, with roles in Anandabhairavi (2007), Malabar Wedding (2008), 3 Char Sou Bees (2010), and Balyakala Sakhi (2014). In 2010 he appeared as Jose Thomas in the film Youth Festival, and in 2016 he played Shaji Kallur in the telefilm Meghangal.

Other roles and activities
Ramachandran served as vice president of the Malayalam Film Producers Association and edited the film magazine Chalachithram. He developed promotional partnerships tying his jewellery business to regional media and institutions, creating campaigns such as ATLAS Golden Harvest with Malayala Manorama, ATLAS Read & Win with Gulf News, and several other brand promotions with newspapers, radio stations and airlines.

Philanthropy and personal pursuits
He supported educational causes in Kerala, establishing scholarship programs for schools in his home state. Known for presenting himself as the face of his brand, he played an active role in marketing and public outreach for Atlas Jewellery.

Personal life and death
Ramachandran was married to Indira Ramachandran and they had two children: a son, Srikanth Ramachandran, and a daughter, Manju Ramachandran. He lived in Dubai during his later years. On 2 October 2022 he died at Aster Hospital in Mankhool, Dubai, of a heart attack at the age of 80.
