Early life and background

Atul Khatri was born on 10 January 1968 in Mumbai and grew up in the city he still calls home. He attended St. Theresa's High School in Mumbai and went on to earn a Bachelor of Engineering from Thadomal Shahani Engineering College. He later completed a certificate in business administration from Alliance Manchester Business School. He comes from a Sindhi-Hindu family; his mother’s family has roots in Karachi. He is married to Shaguna Khatri and the couple have two daughters, Mishti and Diya.

Career

Before pursuing comedy, Khatri ran his family’s IT business and served as Chief Executive Officer of Kaytek Computer Services Private Limited. In his early 40s he began exploring other interests and eventually found his way into stand-up. He took an open-mic slot in 2012 and soon began performing more regularly.

Khatri was a finalist at the Delhi edition of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2012 and won the reality competition CEOs Got Talent in 2014. That same year he became the first Indian comic to perform at the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival, and he has performed across the globe in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Kuwait, the UAE, Nigeria and Malaysia.

He was an early member of the comedy collective East India Comedy (EIC) and appeared on several of their YouTube series and specials. In 2017 he left EIC to concentrate on his solo stand-up career and to develop his own YouTube presence.

Khatri’s international profile grew further when his stand-up special "The Happiest Ending" appeared on Netflix on 1 January 2019 as part of the COMEDIANS of the World series. His participation in that collection of global performers also led to his inclusion on a Netflix billboard in Times Square, New York.

Alongside live performances, Khatri has appeared in commercials for brands such as Amazon, Muthoot Finance, Rebtel, Aegon Religare Insurance and Philips. He maintains an active YouTube channel where he posts stand-up clips and a news-focused segment titled "Only Positive News!", which he began during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Public profile

Khatri brings a perspective shaped by midlife experience to his comedy, drawing material from current affairs, everyday observations and politics. As of 2020 he had performed in over 400 shows spanning corporate, college and private events. He is an avid dog lover and owns a pet named Butter, for whom he manages an Instagram account.

Outside of entertainment, Khatri has worked with his sister, Dr. Anjali Chhabria, on an initiative to raise mental health awareness, particularly focused on helping young people recognize early signs of depression and seek help without stigma.
