Early life and background

Atul Parchure was born on 30 November 1966 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He studied at Doongasree Gangji Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Matunga and completed a graduate degree. Raised in a Marathi milieu, Parchure began his involvement with performance during his college years, taking part in stage work that formed the foundation of his acting career.

Career

Parchure’s professional life spanned theatre, television and film. He started out on the stage while still a student, appearing in several plays that helped establish him as a comic performer. His theatre work included productions such as Wah Guru, Priyatama, Tarun Turk Mhatare Arka, Aamhi Ani Aamche Baap and Kaapus Kondyachi Goshta.

He made his film debut in Marathi cinema as the young Jagdeshwar (the younger version of the Ashok Saraf character) in Khichdi (1985). His first Hindi film appearance came later, credited as Thambi in Bedardi (1993). Over the years he appeared in numerous feature films across Hindi and Marathi cinema, with credits including Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), Chor Machaye Shor (2002), Navra Maza Navsacha (2004), Billu Barber (2009), Khatta Meetha (2010), Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap (2011) and Braveheart (2017).

Television became a strong platform for Parchure’s comic timing. He was widely recognized for roles in serials such as RK Laxman Ki Duniya (as Bhavesh Krishnakant Vasavda, 2011–2013), Bh se Bhade (2013), Yum Hai Hum (2014–2016), Jago Mohan Pyare (2017–2018) and Bhago Mohan Pyare (2019–2020). His portrayal of Mohan Ashtaputre in Bhago Mohan Pyare drew particular attention and earned him industry accolades: at the 2019 Zee Marathi Utsav Natyancha Awards he received both Best Actor and Best Comedy Character awards for his work on that series.

Parchure also made guest appearances on popular comedy variety shows, including a few episodes of The Kapil Sharma Show where he played the father of Sumona Chakravarti’s character.

Following a prolonged battle with liver cancer, Atul Parchure died in Mumbai on 14 October 2024 at the age of 57.
