He grew up in the city and attended Bal Shiksha Niketan in Qaiserbagh and Queens Anglo Sanskrit Inter College for his school education. For higher studies he attended the University of Allahabad and the University of Lucknow, completing studies at the latter in 1983. He also received formal acting training at the Bharatendu Academy of Dramatic Arts in Lucknow.

He comes from a family with ties to the arts; an uncle, B.N. Srivastava, worked as an actor and exposed Atul to performance during his teenage years. He has three brothers and one sister. Two of his brothers, Prafull and Mayank Srivastava, are noted in his family history; both passed away in 2021. Another brother is Sanjay Srivastava.
