Atulyabhai Yogindrabhai Mafatlal was born on 18 August 1965 in Gujarat, India. He attended Campion School in Mumbai. He was the son of Yogindra Mafatlal and Madhuri Mafatlal and was raised in a prominent business family that owned the Sungrace–Mafatlal group and a large family residence on Altamount Road in Mumbai.

Atulya Mafatlal worked as a businessman and investor and served as head of the Yogindra Mafatlal group of companies. He inherited leadership responsibilities in the family business after the death of his father, Yogindra Mafatlal, in 2005. During his career he was associated with the family’s commercial interests and maintained relationships with prominent figures across Indian industry and public life.

The Mafatlal family’s disputes over property and inheritance received extensive media attention.
