Early life and background

Autumn Best was born on September 17, 2002, and raised in Southern Utah. Brought up in a middle-class household, she spent her childhood in a family environment that encouraged early participation in the arts. She joined a local theatre group at around four years old and continued performing through her youth. She completed high school and had at one point planned to study theatre at New York University.

Autumn was raised within the Mormon tradition and identifies as Christian. She also lives with a limb difference: she was born without fingers on her left hand, having only a thumb. That physical difference has been part of her personal story since childhood and has influenced how she approaches auditions and roles.

Career

Autumn Best’s screen career began to gain wider notice when she was cast in the 2021 CW reboot of the science fiction mystery drama 4400. In that series she portrayed the character Mildred Bell, marking one of her first prominent television roles.

In 2023 she was cast in the crime thriller film Woman of the Hour, a dramatization connected to the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and his 1978 appearance on the television show The Dating Game. Autumn played the role of Amy in that production. The film was released on Netflix in October 2024.

Her path to some projects has included unexpected moments: while she was working at a coffee shop in Chicago, she received an email that led to an audition for Woman of the Hour. Because of her limb difference, Autumn has said she sometimes assumes she will be excluded from auditions for roles based on real people, but she has nevertheless secured significant parts on television and in film.

Public profile

Autumn Best has a visible social media presence, including an active Instagram account where she shares personal moments, photos with her pet dog, and reflections on her life and work. In 2022 she publicly shared that she identifies as queer.

Her physical characteristics are sometimes noted in public profiles: she is approximately 5 feet 5 inches (165 cm) tall, has medium copper blonde hair and turquoise-colored eyes. She has a tattoo on her left leg featuring a fire and sunflower motif.

Advocacy and creative goals

As an actor with a limb difference, Autumn is an advocate for greater representation of creatives with disabilities. She has expressed an interest in developing and writing projects that highlight disabled talent and create more opportunities for performers who do not fit traditional casting expectations.
