Avicii Biography

Swedish DJ, producer and musician Tim Bergling, known globally as Avicii, rose from bedroom remixer to one of the world’s most successful electronic acts.A

Early life and background

Tim Bergling was born on 8 September 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up in a family with ties to the entertainment industry: his mother, Anki Lidén, is an actress. Bergling completed his secondary education and developed an early interest in music, beginning to remix and make tracks at home as a teenager. He adopted the stage name Avicii, a word from Buddhism suggested by a friend.

Career

Bergling’s public musical career began with early releases and remixes that circulated online and drew attention from industry figures. A pivotal moment came when manager Ash Pournouri contacted him after discovering his uploads on blogs, helping to steer his career forward. He released his first credited single in 2008 and signed with the Defjitts Plays label in 2007. A breakthrough single, released a few years later, reached the top 20 in several European countries.

Avicii continued to expand his profile through collaborations and major label relationships. He signed with EMI Music Publishing’s European A&R team in 2010 and worked with established artists in the dance music scene. A notable collaboration with David Guetta resulted in a track that earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2012.

In 2013 Avicii released his debut studio album, True. The following years brought a string of awards recognizing both the artist and his songs, including honors from American Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, Billboard and iHeartRadio, as well as international recognition at the World Music Awards and other ceremonies. Songs from this period were among the most prominent dance/electronic releases of the early 2010s.

Bergling maintained a visible signature style as a performer and producer. He was known for working on a MacBook Pro and favored relaxed shirts onstage. Over time the demands of touring and performing took a toll. In 2016 he announced he was stepping away from touring, explaining in an open letter that the life of constant travel left little room for a private life outside of music.

Public profile

Avicii became counted among the world’s most successful DJs and was widely recognized by both fans and industry peers. He won multiple awards for his music, including accolades for his songs and as an artist in electronic dance music categories. His music drew on a range of influences and he listed favorite artists and bands that included Kiss, Daft Punk, Laidback Luke, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso. He also enjoyed hobbies such as traveling, skiing, playing video games and reading.

Personal life and family

Bergling was Swedish by nationality and identified with Christian religious background. His family includes his father, Klas Bergling, and siblings. He had been publicly linked to relationships in the early 2010s. He lived for periods in homes outside Sweden, including a large residence in the Hollywood Hills.

Health and death

Bergling struggled with health issues related to alcohol consumption. On 20 April 2018 he was found dead in Muscat, Oman. At the time of his death he was 28 years old. The reported cause of death cited acute pancreatitis connected to excessive drinking.

Latest updates

After he stopped touring in 2016, Bergling continued to be influential through his recordings, collaborations and the impact he left on the global electronic music scene. His passing in 2018 prompted widespread reflection on the pressures faced by artists in the modern music industry and renewed interest in his catalog of work.
