Early life and background

Avinash Mukund Sable was born on 13 September 1994 in Mandwa, a village in Beed district of Maharashtra. Growing up in a farming family, his parents Mukund and Vaishali Sable worked as farmers. From a young age he covered long distances to attend school—running or walking roughly twelve kilometres a day—an experience he later described as formative for his endurance.

After completing twelfth grade, at eighteen he enlisted in the Indian Army and joined the 5th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment. His early postings included duty at Siachen Glacier, Lalgarh Jattan near the Pakistan border in Rajasthan, and a posting in Sikkim. Service in these postings coincided with his introduction to structured athletics training within the Army.

Career

Sable was identified by army coach Amrish Kumar in January 2017 after a cross-country race in Hyderabad. At that time he was substantially overweight for a distance runner and he undertook a focused fitness program, losing about 20 kilograms over several months. Under Kumar’s guidance he transitioned to the 3000m steeplechase, drawing on his strengths in strength and endurance developed in rural life.

He made his first steeplechase appearance at the Federation Cup in 2017. In the years that followed Sable progressed rapidly on the national and international stage. In 2019 he set a national record in the 3000m steeplechase at the Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championship in Bhubaneswar, clocking 8:28.94 and breaking a 37-year-old national standard. That performance helped him become the first Indian steeplechaser since 1991 to qualify for the World Athletics Championships.

Sable continued to lower national marks across distances. He set a national half-marathon record at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2020 with a time of 1:00:30. In 2022 he broke the long-standing national record in the 5000m, recording 13:25.65 at the Sound Running Track meet in San Juan Capistrano. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham he produced another national record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:11.20 and won the silver medal in a race traditionally dominated by Kenyan athletes.

His upward trajectory continued at major championships. He became the first Indian to win gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023 with an 8:19.50 performance. In 2024 he further improved his steeplechase personal best at the Paris Diamond League, lowering the national record to 8:09.91. He also won the men's 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, in 2025, a gold that ended a long gap for India in the event at that competition.

Across his career he has earned multiple national titles and medals at inter-services and national championships, represented India at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (held in 2021), and competed at World Athletics Championships, including a showing in Oregon in 2022.
