Early life and background

Avinash Vijay Sachdev was born on 22 August 1986 in Mumbai and grew up in Vadodara, Gujarat, where he completed his education before returning to Mumbai to pursue a career in entertainment. He is an only child and was raised in a Hindu household. As a young aspirant he wanted to work behind the camera and initially aimed to become a director.

Physical details often included in profiles list him at about 180 cm (5'10") and around 70 kg, with black hair and black eyes.

Career

Sachdev began his career in television working behind the scenes. His earliest credited industry role was as an assistant director on the StarPlus series Hatim (2004). He later assisted on the film Rock On!! (2008).

He transitioned to acting with a TV acting debut in Karam Apnaa Apnaa (2006) on StarPlus, playing Sumit Malhotra. In 2007 he played a negative character, Salman, in Khwaish on Sony TV. The following year he appeared in Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil in dual negative roles and achieved widespread recognition for his portrayal of Dev Purohit in the Zee TV serial Chotti Bahu (2008), a role that won him industry attention and awards recognition.

In 2009 he received the Fresh New Face (Male) award at the Indian Telly Awards and was also nominated that year for Best New Actor in a Lead Role (Male) for his work on Chotti Bahu.

Across the 2010s Sachdev continued to appear regularly on television. He played Shlok Agnihotri in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? Ek Baar Phir (2012) after replacing the lead actor from season one; while his entry was initially met with resistance from some viewers, he later reported that audience reaction became more positive. He took part in sport-themed celebrity cricket on Box Cricket League as a player for Kolkata Baabu Moshayes (2015) and Jaipur Raj Joshiley (2016).

His TV credits also include Qubool Hai (2015), Balika Vadhu (2016), Ayushman Bhava (2017), and Main Bhi Ardhangini (2019). In 2019 he partnered with Palak Purswani on the celebrity dance show Nach Baliye 9. He has acted in digital projects as well, appearing as Vivek in the 2021 web series Suraj Aur Saanjh.

Beyond acting, Sachdev has worked as a model, earned several regional pageant titles such as Mr. Baroda, Mr. University and Mr. Gujarat in the mid-2000s, and participated in the Gladrags Model Hunt. He launched a YouTube channel in 2016 called MONKTALES by Avinash Sachdev where he shared travel vlogs. He has also lent his voice as a dubbing artist, providing the Hindi voice for Dhanush’s role in the dubbed release of the film Vaathi (2023).

Sachdev has appeared in numerous commercials for brands including TVS Scooty, Cadbury Dairy Milk, GRT Jewellers and eBay, and has worked alongside established film actors in advertising work.

His personal life has been part of his public profile. Sachdev married actress Shalmalee Desai on 12 June 2015; the marriage ended in divorce in 2017. He has also been publicly linked to actresses Rubina Dilaik and Palak Purswani in past relationships. In January 2022 it was reported that Sachdev and Purswani had already ended their relationship a few months earlier; the couple had held a roka ceremony in January 2021.

Sachdev has spoken publicly about the challenges he faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said two film projects he had signed did not proceed and that he experienced financial setbacks, including selling personal assets and closing a restaurant he opened after finding work difficult to come by. He has also described the mental strain he experienced during that period.
