Avtar Gill was born on 13 May 1950 in Kalakh, Ludhiana, Punjab. His family moved to Chembur, Mumbai when he was an infant, and he grew up in that neighbourhood. He attended Khalsa College in the King’s Circle area of Matunga, Mumbai, where classmates and collaborators helped him find a path into acting. He holds a bachelor’s degree and developed an early interest in performance, taking part in college theatre and later working with the Indian People’s Theatre Association.

Career

Gill began his screen career in Punjabi cinema with a 1978 role and made his Hindi film debut the following year in Noorie (1979), a production from Yash Chopra’s company. Through the 1980s and 1990s he built a long-running presence in both films and television, appearing in well-known Hindi features in supporting roles and in several memorable TV series.

On stage, Gill has maintained a consistent commitment to theatre across decades. He has acted in plays in multiple languages—including Hindi, Punjabi, English and Marathi—and has performed across India and abroad. Notable stage pieces in his repertoire include Wo Lahore, Biwi O Biwi, Tajmahal Ka Tender and Wrong Number.

In film, Gill has portrayed a range of supporting characters: from a police commissioner in Shahenshah (1988) to Usman Bhai in Agneepath (1990), Inspector Deshpande in Aashiqui (1990), Salim Bhai in Sadak (1991), Natwar Lal Yadav in Dilwale (1994) and Amrit Pal in Airlift (2016). He also appeared in Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai (1980), a film that received critical recognition.

On television Gill gained particular notice for his role as Kader Bhai in the popular social drama Nukkad (1986–87), a series that depicted everyday life in Mumbai and later inspired a follow-up season.
