Early life and background

Ayla Malik was born on 6 October 1970 in Mianwali and grew up in the Kalabagh area of the district. She comes from a politically active family: her father was politician Malik Allahyar Khan, her grandfather Malik Amir Mohammad Khan served as governor of West Pakistan in the 1960s, and her maternal uncle Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari later became President of Pakistan. Malik spent her childhood in Kalabagh and attended Froebel’s International School in Islamabad. She later studied economics at Moscow State University according to available records.

As a young woman she was active in sports. Reports indicate she competed at national level in badminton and took part in karate and shooting events, winning medals in several competitions.

Career

Malik entered politics in 1998 by joining the Millat Party, where she was appointed deputy secretary general. She was elected to the National Assembly on a reserved seat for women and served from 2002 to 2007 as part of the National Alliance.

After a period in journalism, Malik returned to partisan politics. In 2009 she joined Dunya News and hosted a talk show titled Situation Room with Ayla Malik, interviewing prominent figures in Pakistani public life. In 2011 she met with Imran Khan and subsequently joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Within PTI she was involved with the party’s social media operations and was considered for nomination to a reserved National Assembly seat, though the party did not secure the necessary allocation.

In 2013 she filed to contest the by-election for the Mianwali seat, but an election tribunal of the Lahore High Court disqualified her from that contest on the basis that her academic credentials submitted to the Election Commission were declared fake. The tribunal ruling referenced both a higher secondary certificate and an economics degree.

Malik remained a visible figure in public life and in 2017 announced her resignation from PTI, stating the party no longer followed policies she associated with public welfare.

Public profile

Ayla Malik has moved between journalism and active politics throughout her career. She has been identified with multiple political parties: Millat Party from 1998 until joining PTI in 2011, and prior service with the National Alliance during her term as a member of the National Assembly. Her media work included hosting a televised talk show on Dunya News that brought her into direct contact with many national leaders.

Her family ties and background have been a frequent part of public coverage. She is one of several members of her family involved in politics; her sister Sumaira Malik also served in the National Assembly, and Malik’s daughter Myra Malik is married to politician Amir Malik.

Several controversies have been part of her public record. In 2013 she was disqualified from contesting the Mianwali by-election by a Lahore High Court election tribunal because of findings about the authenticity of academic documents submitted to the election authorities. Reports also note a bank labeled her a defaulter in a loan case that year and that she was injured when her campaign convoy came under attack in Mianwali; she reportedly returned fire during that incident.

Latest updates

In late 2022 leaked audio recordings circulated online that included conversations between Imran Khan and a woman identified as Ayla Malik. Malik denied that the voice in the recordings was hers. PTI also characterized the tapes as not genuine. In 2017 she had already left PTI and since then has not returned to a prominent party role according to available information.
