Ayush Shetty Biography

Ayush Shetty is an Indian badminton player from Karkala, Karnataka. Born in 2005, he rose through local coaching and the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy

Early life and background

Ayush Shetty was born on 3 May 2005 in Karkala, Karnataka, and grew up in the nearby village of Sanoor. His father, Ram Prakash Shalmili, worked as a farmer. Ayush first became interested in badminton at around eight years old after watching his father play in the backyard; those early informal sessions sparked his pursuit of the sport.

As a child he received his first formal coaching in Karkala and Mangalore under local coaches Subhash and Chetan. When he was twelve, his family relocated to Bengaluru so he could access higher-level training. In the city he joined the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, where he focused on improving agility, court defense, and overall match play under structured guidance.

Career

Shetty is a right-handed singles player. He began competing in junior international events and collected podium finishes as he progressed. In 2021 he won the Denmark Junior International in the boys' singles category. That result helped establish him on the junior international circuit.

In 2023 he earned multiple medals across senior and junior events: a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Spokane in boys' singles, and silver medals at the Bahrain International Challenge and the YONEX-SUNRISE Odisha Masters representing India in men's singles. He also recorded a silver at the 2024 Dutch International Open Challenge for India in men's singles.

A career highlight came in 2025 at the U.S. Open Super 300 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Shetty competed for Team India in the men's singles draw. He reached the final and produced a notable victory over Brian Yang, winning in straight games 21-13, 21-18. His run at that tournament is presented in available records as a defining moment of his early senior career.

Shetty has worked with a number of coaches and mentors through his development, including Subhash, Chetan, and Sagar Chopra. Those mentors contributed to his transition from regional junior events to the international senior circuit.

Public profile

At about 6 feet 4 inches tall (listed approximately 195 cm), Shetty's physical presence is frequently noted in profiles. He has black hair and black eyes and plays right-handed. He is listed as pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports at Reva University in Bengaluru, combining academic study with his sporting commitments.

As of 2025 he is unmarried and follows Hinduism. His zodiac sign is listed as Taurus. He is identified as an Indian national and continues to be associated with his hometown of Karkala.

Latest updates

The most recent competitive highlight on record is his 2025 U.S. Open Super 300 performance in Council Bluffs, where he defeated Brian Yang in the final in straight sets. That event is presented as a peak moment in his career to date and underscores his progression from junior success to results on the senior international stage.

Shetty remains an emerging talent from Karnataka who developed through local coaching and the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy. His trajectory includes junior international titles, multiple medals at senior-level events, and a Super 300 title appearance that marks him as a player to watch in coming seasons.
