Early life and backgroundAziz Ansari was born on February 23, 1983, in Columbia, South Carolina, and grew up in Bennettsville, South Carolina. He attended Marlboro Academy and later the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville. Ansari went on to study at New York University’s Stern School of Business, where he graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Business Administration specializing in marketing.
Career
Ansari began doing stand-up comedy while a student at NYU in 2000. Early in his career he performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where he developed collaborations with peers including Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer and director Jason Woliner. Those partnerships helped lead to short films and the sketch series Shutterbugs (2005–2010), which featured Ansari alongside Huebel and Scheer.
He was a member of the sketch-comedy trio behind the MTV series Human Giant (2007), which ran for two seasons. Ansari moved into television comedy with a recurring presence on Flight of the Conchords and in June 2008 joined the cast of Parks and Recreation as a main character for all seven seasons.
Ansari created and starred as Dev Shah in the Netflix series Master of None, which he co-created with Alan Yang. The show earned critical acclaim and multiple awards and nominations, and Ansari’s parents even played his character’s parents on the series. In 2016 he published the book Modern Romance: An Investigation with sociologist Eric Klinenberg, exploring changes in dating and relationships.
In film, Ansari has appeared in titles such as School for Scoundrels (his listed film debut, 2006), Funny People (2008), Observe and Report (2009), Get Him to the Greek (2010), 30 Minutes or Less (2011) and This Is the End (2013). He has also contributed voice work to the animated series Bob’s Burgers and appeared briefly in the Jay-Z and Kanye West music video for “Otis.”

Ansari has toured extensively and released multiple stand-up specials. After early touring with groups like the Comedians of Comedy and Flight of the Conchords, he launched his first solo tour, Glow in the Dark, in 2009. Subsequent tours included Dangerously Delicious and Buried Alive, the latter of which became a special that premiered on Netflix in November 2013. Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden premiered on Netflix in 2015. In 2019 he released Aziz Ansari: Right Now and later released Aziz Ansari: Nightclub Comedian in 2022. In 2019 he also collaborated with Dave Chappelle for several performances and toured with material addressing subjects including sexual misconduct and cultural appropriation.

Ansari’s stand-up was recognized early when he received a Jury Award for Best Standup at HBO’s U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen in 2006. His work on Master of None brought further honors: Critics’ Choice and Peabody Awards for the series, and awards and nominations including Golden Globe and Emmy recognition for acting and writing. He was ranked among the greatest stand-up comedians by Rolling Stone and was named to Time’s list of the most influential people in 2016. He also became the first actor of Indian descent to win a Golden Globe in the Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy category.
