Bal Krishna Ganjoo, commonly referred to as B. K. Ganjoo, was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family and raised in Kanikadal, Srinagar. He completed an engineering degree in telecommunication from the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar (now the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar). Ganjoo worked for the P&T (Post and Telegraph) department in Kashmir.

Ganjoo was employed as a telecommunication engineer. His role with the P&T department placed him in a sensitive public-utility position during a period of rising unrest in Kashmir. Media reports from the time indicate that some militants regarded him as a suspected government informant, a perception that contributed to the danger he faced in 1990.

On 19 March 1990, Ganjoo was killed at his home in Chota Bazar, Kanikadal, Srinagar. Contemporary reports state that militants followed him to his residence that evening.
