Bhojaraj Ramchandrappa Patil was born on 15 November 1949 in Sarasamba, Aland Taluk, in what is now Gulbarga district, Karnataka. He grew up in a family shaped by public service: his father, Ramchandrappa, was a freedom fighter who opposed the Razakar Army of the erstwhile Nizam. His father died when Patil was very young, and his mother, Gangabai R. Patil, raised him and his siblings while managing multiple parcels of farmland.
