B. Y. Vijayendra Biography
B. Y. Vijayendra is an Indian politician from Karnataka affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Son of former Karnataka chief minister B. S. Yediyurppa
Early life and backgroundBookanakere Yediyurappa Vijayendra was born on 5 November 1975 in Shikaripur in Shimoga district, Karnataka. He grew up in the same region that later formed the base of his political activity. Vijayendra studied law and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya College of Law in Bengaluru. He is the son of B. S. Yediyurappa and Mythra Devi and belongs to the Lingayat community.
Career
Vijayendra’s political career has been conducted within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its youth wing. He served as secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha’s Bengaluru unit in 2009 and was elevated to the role of general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in April 2018. During his time with the BJYM he organised and led protests on issues such as alleged corruption and demands for investigations into scams.
As a party strategist and organiser, Vijayendra was entrusted with responsibility for several important bye-elections. He was the in-charge for the Sira assembly constituency bye-election in 2018 and for the KR Pete bye-election in 2019, both of which resulted in victories for BJP candidates in constituencies where the party had previously struggled. In 2020 he was named State Vice President of the BJP in Karnataka.
Ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, the party tasked him with convening district-level conventions for seven morchas. He contested the 2023 state elections from Shikaripura and won the seat, defeating opponents by a margin of 11,008 votes. In November 2023 he was appointed president of the Karnataka BJP unit and assumed the role on 15 November 2023.
Public profile
Vijayendra’s public life has often been seen in the context of his relationship with his father, four-time former chief minister B. S. Yediyurappa. That relationship has at times drawn criticism from other party figures who accused the family of seeking political influence within the BJP. Vijayendra has denied suggestions that he performed administrative duties on behalf of his father, saying he only assisted the elder Yediyurappa.
Controversies have also featured in his public record. He and members of his family were named in a 2012 CBI inquiry related to mining; a special CBI court later exculpated the accused in 2016 for lack of evidence. Public complaints and disputes have arisen at various points, including a petition seeking reinvestigation into the death of his mother, and an allegation related to temple entry during the Covid-19 lockdown. Several pending criminal charges are listed against him in public documents, covering a range of alleged offences.
Personal life
Vijayendra is married to Prema Vijayendra and they have two daughters, B. V. Maithri and B. V. Jhansi. His elder brother B. Y. Raghavendra serves as a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha). Other family members include sisters who are active in education and social service fields.
