Early life and background

Mohammad Babar Azam was born on 15 October 1994 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Raised in Lahore, he attended The Lords International School System and later studied at the University of the Punjab. Cricket ran in his family: several cousins, including Kamran, Adnan and Umar Akmal, have played at high levels, and his father is named Azam Siddique. From a young age Babar trained under coach Mansoor Hameed at a local club in Lahore, where he developed the disciplined practice routine that has characterized his career.

Career

Babar progressed rapidly through Pakistan’s age-group system. He represented Pakistan at the Under-15 and Under-19 World Cups, topping the run charts for his side on multiple occasions and captaining the Under-19 team in 2012. At 15 he made his domestic List A debut for Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, and at 16 he played his first-class debut in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, marking the start of a steady climb through domestic cricket.
