Early life and background

Babu Antony was born on 22 February 1966 in Ponkunnam, Kerala. He grew up in a middle‑class Christian family and began formal training in martial arts at a very young age under a teacher known as Sebastian Master. His early training included the traditional Kerala art of kalarippayattu; later, while pursuing post‑graduate studies in Pune, he expanded his repertoire to include karate and a range of other fighting disciplines.

Antony completed a degree in English literature and followed it with a postgraduate qualification in human resources management. During his time in Pune he taught karate to missionaries and later joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, as a cinematographer before moving fully into acting.

Career

Antony made his on‑screen debut with a small role in the 1985 Malayalam film Shathru. Through the late 1980s he appeared in a series of regional films, gaining wider attention with his portrayal of Lomapadhan in the period drama Vaisali (1988). That performance helped establish him as a distinctive presence in Malayalam cinema.

Known for his physicality and fighting ability, Antony built a reputation for action roles and characters with a menacing edge. He played a range of villainous and intense parts through the 1990s and 2000s, including notable roles in films such as Aparahnam and Uppukandam Brothers. His filmography spans multiple Indian languages: he has credits in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi productions. Selected debuts include the Tamil film Poovizhi Vasalile (1987), the Telugu film Pasivadi Pranam (1987), the Kannada film Shanti Kranti (1991), the Hindi film Hatya (1988), and an English‑language release Bullets Blades and Blood (2019).

Over decades of work Antony has taken both lead and supporting parts. He has appeared in popular Malayalam titles including Uthaman (2001), Thandavam (2002), Vajram (2004), Sambhu (2009) and Christian Brothers (2011). On the national stage his credits include Nayak: The Real Hero (2001) and Ekk Deewana Tha (2012). In 2022 he portrayed a Rashtrakuta king in Mani Ratnam’s epic Ponniyin Selvan.

Martial arts and other ventures

A multiple Dan black belt holder, Antony introduced several martial arts techniques to South Indian cinema and became known for racy fight choreography, quick punches, fast kicks and fluid movement. He has taught martial arts at institutions such as the Papal Pontifical College in Pune and later founded the Babu Antony School of Martial Arts in the Gulf Cooperation Council region in 2015; one branch of the school was subsequently opened in Missouri City, Texas.

Antony moved to the United States with his family and settled in Houston, Texas. He has trained his sons in martial arts, and his elder son Arthur holds a Dan black belt and has worked as an actor and singer.

Public profile

Antony’s screen image—marked by shoulder‑length hair and a heavy beard in many roles—helped redefine villainy for a generation of regional filmgoers. By 2022 he had appeared in more than 200 films across several languages. Outside the camera he pursues painting and poetry when time permits.
