Early life and backgroundBabul Supriyo Baral was born on 15 December 1970 in Uttarpara, Hooghly District, West Bengal. Raised in a Bengali family with musical roots, he learned much of his early musical training from his grandfather, Banikantha N.C. Baral, who was a composer and vocalist. He attended Don Bosco High & Technical School in Liluah and later studied commerce, earning a B.Com. (Honours) from Serampore College, University of Calcutta in 1991.
After college he briefly worked at Standard Chartered Bank before moving to Mumbai in 1992 to pursue a career in entertainment. Early in his time in Mumbai he toured internationally, performing with established figures such as Amitabh Bachchan and Asha Bhosle, and adopted the stage name Babul Supriyo for his professional work.
Career
Supriyo built a varied career as a playback singer, television host and actor. He made his Bollywood playback debut in 1994 with the film Prem Yog, and rose to wider recognition with the song "Dil Ne Dil Ko Pukara" from Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai in 2000. His voice featured on other popular film tracks including songs for Hum Tum, Hungama and Fanaa. Across his musical career he has recorded playback in multiple languages and has performed live at events and festivals, including a noted appearance at Mumbai’s Powai Sarvajanin Durgotsav in 2011.
On television he hosted the singing show K for Kishore in 2007–2008. As an actor he appeared in films such as Mr. Joe B. Carvalho (2014). He also participated in collaborative music projects, including a performance on MTV Coke Studio Season 4 in 2015 alongside his daughter.
Politics
Supriyo entered politics in March 2014 when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). That year he contested and won the Lok Sabha seat from Asansol, West Bengal. He was appointed as a Union Minister of State in Narendra Modi’s cabinet later in 2014, initially handling portfolios linked to urban development and related subjects. In 2016 his ministerial assignment shifted to the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
He retained his parliamentary seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, winning from Asansol. In July 2021 he resigned from the Council of Ministers and shortly thereafter announced his decision to quit politics; in September 2021 he joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC). In August 2022 he became a cabinet minister in the West Bengal government, and in September 2023 he was appointed Cabinet Minister of the Department of Information Technology & Electronics and the Department of Non-conventional and Renewable Energy Sources of West Bengal.
