Early life and background

Babulal Marandi was born on 11 January 1958 in Kodia Bandh village in Giridih district, then part of Bihar and now in Jharkhand. He belongs to the Santhal community and spent his early years in the region that would later become Jharkhand. Marandi completed primary schooling at a government school in Giridih, finished his Class 10 studies at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir in Baghmara, and attended Giridih College for his BA. He went on to complete postgraduate studies in geography at Ranchi University.

During his university years Marandi became active with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and later served as a pracharak in Bihar. After brief work as a primary school teacher in his hometown, he left teaching to devote more time to organizational work. From 1983 to 1990 he was organizing secretary for the Vananchal wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and in 1983 moved to Dumka to work in the Santhal Parganas division.

Career

Marandi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1989 and rose through party ranks in the 1990s. He served as president of the Bihar State Adivasi Morcha and took on roles within the state party, including secretary of the BJP in Bihar in 1994 and president of the BJP’s Vananchal State Committee in 1995.

He contested multiple elections through the 1990s, losing early bids for the Dumka seat before winning a Lok Sabha seat there in 1998. He was appointed Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests in the late 1990s and won re-election to the Lok Sabha in 1999.

Marandi played a central role in the movement that resulted in creation of the state of Jharkhand in 2000. After the new state was formed he became its first Chief Minister, a position he held from 2000 until 2003. During his tenure he prioritized infrastructure and education, focusing on road and rail improvements, strengthening schooling, and proposing expansion plans for Greater Ranchi.

After serving as chief minister he continued at the national and state levels. He won the Kodarma Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and served on parliamentary committees, including Human Resource Development. Citing political differences, Marandi resigned as a member of parliament and left the BJP on 22 May 2006. Later that year, on 24 September 2006, he founded the regional party Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik).

With JVM(P) he won the Kodarma Lok Sabha seat again in 2009 and was elected from the Dhanwar constituency to the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly in 2014. He also won the Dhanwar seat in the 2014 general elections. In 2019 he contested the Kodarma seat but was defeated. On 17 February 2020, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha merged back into the Bharatiya Janata Party, and Marandi rejoined the BJP the same day.

Marandi has been active on a range of political fronts over several decades, moving between national and regional politics and holding both executive and legislative posts. After rejoining the BJP, he was named leader of the opposition in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly on 24 February 2020. In July 2023 he was appointed president of the BJP’s Jharkhand unit.

Marandi is married to Shanti Murmu, who is described as a homemaker. The couple have four children: three sons and a daughter. One son, Anup Marandi, was killed by Maoists in October 2007. His other children are named Piyush Lal Marandi, Sanatan Marandi and daughter Shankhani Marandi. His father was Chhotu Lal Marandi (deceased) and his mother is Mina Murmu. He has siblings including a brother Nunulal Marandi and two sisters, one of whom, Maisuni Devi, was reported missing in 2012 and later located in 2020.
