Early life and background

Badrul Islam grew up in India and comes from a Muslim family. He studied at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi and became involved with theatre early on, performing in college cultural events and street plays. A childhood viewing of the film Sholay helped spark his interest in acting.

He trained in stagecraft at the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts in New Delhi and later worked with the National School of Drama, where he appeared in multiple theatrical productions. His stage work included performances outside the city, including a noted visit to a village in Haryana where his play earned him recognition as best actor.

Badrul began his screen career with television, making his TV debut in 2005 on the Sahara One series Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, in which he played the character Rangeela. He moved into films the following year, appearing in Rang De Basanti (2006) as Ravi Das.

In 2018 he was cast as Mustafa in the fantasy television series Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga on Sony SAB, and that same year appeared as Kalyan in the drama film Batti Gul Meter Chalu.

Switching with the industry’s move toward digital, Islam acted in the 2019 web series Mona Home Delivery for Ullu Originals, playing the character Rahman. He continued on to the 2020s with a role as news reporter Tillu Mandothiya in the 2022 action-comedy film An Action Hero. In 2023 he took on a lead television role as Bheem Dubey in the Colors TV drama Suhaagan.

Outside of scripted television and films, Islam has appeared in numerous television commercials and advertisements for brands including Cadbury Shots, 7Up and Smart Bazaar.
