Balkar Sidhu Biography
Balkar Singh Sidhu is an Indian Punjabi singer-turned-politician known for hit songs such as “Maje Diye Mombatiye” and for winning the 2022 Punjab assembly
Early life and backgroundBalkar Singh Sidhu was born on 10 October 1971 in Poohla Village in Bathinda, Punjab. He grew up in a Sikh family; his father, Roop Singh Sidhu, worked as a farmer and his mother is Charanjeet Kaur. Sidhu completed a Bachelor of Arts at Punjabi University, Patiala in 1993. During his college years he took part in theatre and singing and performed in shows for the Kissan Union in Chandigarh.
Career
Sidhu began his music career while still a student. His first album, released in 1991, marked the start of a long recording career. He followed that debut with further albums and songs that blended contemporary pop and traditional Punjabi styles. Several tracks brought him recognition, notably “Maje Diye Mombatiye” and songs from the 2003 album Laung Taviteriaan, including “Vyah.” Other well-known songs in his catalogue include “Din Paperan De,” “Channa Vo,” “Joan,” “Phulkari,” and “Aina Tainu Pyar Kran.” Sidhu has recorded prolific sessions—his second album included eight songs recorded in a single day—and has worked with other Punjabi singers such as Popsy, Jasmeen Akhtar and Gurlej Akhtar. In 2021 he and Gurlej Akhtar collaborated on “Tera Mora Viah,” one of his notable recent songs.
Alongside his recording work, Sidhu has performed live at political rallies and private events such as marriage functions. He expanded into acting with a debut in the Punjabi film Chhankata in 2005, and later appeared in films including Sikander (2013), Jatt James Bond (2014) and Desi Munde (2016).
Political life
Sidhu entered politics formally in May 2014 when he joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). That year he was initially named as AAP’s candidate for the Talwandi Sabo bypoll, but the party later replaced him on the ticket. He left AAP and joined the Indian National Congress in 2016. Sidhu returned to the Aam Aadmi Party in 2021 and successfully contested the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, winning the Rampura Phul constituency and becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Public profile
Outside of music and politics, Sidhu is noted for his athletic interests from youth and has cited Indian athlete Milkha Singh as an inspiration. He is married to Jinder Kaur and the couple have three children: a son, Kaka Kunwar Sidhu, and two daughters, Shabadjot Sidhu and Kasamjot Sidhu. Physically, Sidhu is listed at about 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) with black hair and black eyes.
