Early life and backgroundBalraj Syal was born on 26 January 1983 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He grew up in his hometown and completed his schooling at Shree Parvati Jain Co-Education Senior Secondary School in Jalandhar. After finishing 12th grade he paused his studies for nearly two years due to family financial difficulties, during which time he worked in a clothing shop to help support his household. He later returned to college and completed his graduation.
Balraj and his two sisters were raised by their paternal uncle and aunt after the early deaths of both parents. As a student he took part in college theatre to access a fees concession; that involvement introduced him to performance and set him on a path toward comedy and acting. He has a tattoo on his arm that reflects his love of travelling. His listed hobbies include travelling and listening to music.
Career
Balraj began his on-screen career as a contestant on the Punjabi comedy show Hasde Hasande Ravo in 2009. That early exposure led to appearances on a range of television programmes, including Ikk Tara Bole, Music Online, Desi Talk, and Lots of Ladies. On the Hindi television stage he won the competition Comedy Ka Maha Muqabla in 2014 and served as a creative writer on Comedy Nights With Kapil in 2013. He has also worked as a host on multiple TV shows and appeared on popular reality and entertainment programmes such as Entertainment Ki Raat (2018), Bigg Boss Season 11 as a guest (2017), Mujhse Shaadi Karoge (2020), and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 10 (2020).
Throughout his career he continued to participate in Punjabi television projects, including The Great Punjabi Comedy Show and multiple seasons of Hasde Hasande Ravo.
