Early life and background

Barkha Madan was born on 17 August 1970 in Punjab. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature (Honours). Her father served in the Indian Army, and she has a sister. From childhood she was exposed to Buddhist culture; a school visit to a monastery in Sikkim left a lasting impression and later encounters with Tibetan Buddhist teachings, including listening to the Dalai Lama, deepened her interest.

Career

Barkha began her public career in the pageant circuit. In 1994 she was a finalist in the Miss India competition and finished as runner-up at Miss Tourism International the same year. These early successes led to opportunities in modelling and acting.

Her feature film debut came in 1996 with Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, in which she played the character Jane. She went on to appear in several Hindi films over the next decade, including Driving Miss Palmen (1996), Tera Mera Pyar (1999), Bhoot (2003), Samay: When Time Strikes (2003), and Soch Lo (2010). Soch Lo was produced by her own company, Golden Gate Creations. In 2015 she co-produced the Hindi-language film Surkhaab and also played the lead role.

On television Barkha made her debut in 2002 with the historical drama 1857 Kranti on DD National, portraying Rani Laxmibai. She later appeared in serials such as Nyaay (1999) on DD Network and Ghar Ek Sapnaa (2007) on Sahara One.

Religious life and transformation

In November 2012 Barkha Madan took formal ordination as a Buddhist monk at Hardong Khangtsen of Sera Jey Monastery in Bylakuppe, Karnataka. Under the supervision of Lama Zopa Rinpoche she received the monastic name Ven. Gyalten Samten. She has described a conscious shift away from her former glamorous lifestyle: after ordination she disposed of most personal possessions and now maintains a minimal set of robes, a few woollens, a cell phone, and a laptop.
