Early life and background

Basangouda Ramangouda Patil Yatnal was born on 13 December 1963 in Bijapur (now Vijayapur), Karnataka. He completed his schooling in Bijapur and went on to earn a Bachelor of Commerce degree from BLDEA's A. S. Patil College of Commerce. Hailing from a Lingayat family of the Panchamasali community, Yatnal has maintained his roots in Bijapur throughout his life and public career.

Career

Yatnal’s political trajectory began to take shape in the early 1990s after being noticed and promoted by senior BJP leader H. N. Ananth Kumar. He first won a legislative assembly seat from the Bijapur constituency in 1994. Building on that success, he contested and won the Bijapur Lok Sabha seat in 1999, joining several parliamentary committees that year including those on industry and private members’ bills, as well as the consultative committee for the human resources development ministry.

At the national level he served as Union Minister of State for Textiles from July 2002 until September 2003, and then as Union Minister of State for Railways from September 2003 until May 2004. Yatnal retained the Bijapur parliamentary seat in the 2004 general election.

Back in state politics, he won the Devar Hippargi assembly seat in 2008. His party affiliation has changed over the years: he began in the Bharatiya Janata Party, moved to Janata Dal (Secular) in 2010, resigned from JDS in 2013 and rejoined the BJP. He faced expulsions from the BJP in 2009 and again in 2015 (the latter for six years, though he was brought back into the party in 2018). Between January 2016 and May 2018 he served as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC).

In 2018 he returned to electoral politics with a win from the Bijapur City assembly constituency, and in 2023 he was named the BJP candidate for that same seat.

Public profile

Yatnal has been an outspoken and often controversial public figure. Over the years he has made a number of sharp public statements that attracted significant attention and criticism. His remarks at public events and interviews have drawn rebukes from political opponents and prompted party leadership to issue show-cause notices at times. He has also been involved in public disputes with fellow BJP leaders over strategy and conduct in the state.

Legal matters and controversies have featured prominently in his public record. The available information lists multiple criminal charges and cases against him, ranging from allegations of conspiracy and unlawful assembly to charges including rioting, intimidation, and attempts to cause grievous harm. Separate entries describe charges where cognizance was taken by authorities on matters such as rioting, attempt to murder, and other serious offences. These matters form part of his complex public image.

Yatnal has also publicly accused political rivals and outsiders of corrupt practices and influence peddling. In one instance he claimed he had been approached with offers related to becoming chief minister for large sums of money; that claim drew calls for investigation from political opponents.

Personal life

He is married to Shailaja Basangouda Patil. He is a vegetarian, identifies with Hinduism and, according to available details, follows Lingayat traditions. His height is listed at about 185 cm and his weight around 85 kg. His listed eye and hair colour are black. He has been associated with residences in Pulakeshi Nagar, Galagali Colony, Vijayapur.
