Early life and backgroundBasavaraj Somappa Bommai was born on 28 January 1960 in Hubli, then part of Mysore State (now Karnataka). He grew up in a political family: his father, Somappa Rayappa Bommai, served as the 11th Chief Minister of Karnataka. Bommai completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from B. V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering & Technology (now KLE Technological University) in Hubli. Before entering full-time politics he worked in the Pune division of Tata Motors for several years and later pursued independent business interests as an industrialist.
Career
Bommai began his political journey with the Janata Dal in 1998 and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council from the Dharwad Local Authorities constituency that year. He served as political secretary to then Chief Minister J. H. Patel. As the Janata Dal landscape shifted, he became part of Janata Dal (United) and was again elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council from Dharwad in 2004.
In February 2008 Bommai joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). That year he won election to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly representing the Shiggaon constituency in Haveri district. He was appointed Minister of Water Resources in June 2008 and retained responsibilities for that portfolio through changes in the state government until May 2013. During periods of political change he served under different chief ministers while continuing with the same ministry.
Under the BJP state leadership, Bommai held several senior roles. From August 2019 to July 2021 he served as Minister of Home Affairs. He was the Minister for Cooperation from September 2019 to February 2020, and he took on the Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs portfolio from January 2021 until July 2021. He was also given ministerial charge for districts including Haveri and Udupi at various times.
On 27 July 2021 Bommai was elected by party legislators to succeed B. S. Yediyurappa as Chief Minister of Karnataka, and he was sworn in as the state’s 23rd Chief Minister on 28 July 2021. Early in his term he chaired a cabinet meeting that announced measures such as scholarships for children of farmers and increases in pensions for widows, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens.
In national elections, Bommai contested the 2024 Lok Sabha race from the Haveri constituency in Karnataka and won the seat by a margin of 43,513 votes.
