Basil Joseph was born on 28 April 1990 in Sulthan Bathery, Kerala. He grew up in that town and completed his schooling locally, attending St. Joseph’s English Higher Secondary School in Sulthan Bathery through 10th grade before moving to SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta for his 11th and 12th standards. He later earned a B.Tech and, after graduating, worked as a systems engineer at Infosys in Trivandrum.

He comes from a Christian family; his father, Joseph Pallippattu, worked as a headmaster and his mother is Thankamma Joseph. He has a sister, Shincy Joby, who has worked as a technical specialist at Mindtree Ltd.

Career

Basil Joseph transitioned from engineering into filmmaking, initially contributing as a writer and assistant in the Malayalam film industry. Early credits include story work for short projects and films such as Shhh… (2012), Oru Thundu Padam (2013) and Happy Onam (2014). He also worked as an assistant director to Vineeth Sreenivasan on the 2013 film Thira.

As an actor, his on-screen debut credit appears in Up & Down: Mukalil Oralundu (2013) in a small role, and he went on to appear in a range of Malayalam films. Notable acting appearances include Homely Meals (2014), Mayanadhi (2017), Rosapoo (2018), Love Action Drama (2019), Kettyolaanu Ente Malakha (for which he received recognition), Joji (2021), Minnal Murali (2021, cameo), Dear Friend (2022) and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022), in which he played the character Rajesh.

Joseph made his directorial debut with Kunjiramayanam in 2015 and has balanced directing with acting and writing since.
