Bear Grylls Biography

British adventurer, former SAS serviceman and television presenter Bear Grylls is best known for bringing survival skills to mainstream audiences through a

Early life and background

Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls was born on 7 June 1974 in London, England. He spent his early childhood partly in Northern Ireland and later on the Isle of Wight. Raised in a family with strong ties to public life, Grylls developed an early interest in outdoor pursuits from his father, who sailed and introduced him to climbing and seamanship.

Grylls was educated at Eaton House, Ludgrove School and Eton College. He studied Hispanic and Latin American studies at university level and later attended Birkbeck, University of London. He is fluent in several languages, including Spanish, German and French. As a teenager he trained in skydiving and earned a second Dan black belt in Shotokan karate.

Career

Grylls served with the Special Air Service and later became a survival instructor and adventurer. He reached the summit of Mount Everest at age 23, fulfilling a long-held ambition. His subsequent expeditions include circumnavigating the British Isles by water scooter in 2000 and crossing the North Atlantic from Halifax to John o' Groats in 2003, an effort that exposed him to force 8 gales.

He has set and contributed to a number of records and high-profile feats: creating a highest open-air formal dinner at 7,600 meters in a hot-air balloon, achieving a paramotoring record over the Himalayas in 2008 by reaching about 9,000 meters, and sharing a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous indoor free-fall alongside two amputees.

Grylls moved into television and writing, becoming widely known for his survival series Man vs. Wild (2006–2011). He has also fronted other TV projects such as Running Wild with Bear Grylls, Bear Grylls: Mission Survive, Bear Grylls Survival School, Survivor Games and Bear's Mission. Running Wild has featured a range of prominent guests across its episodes, including political and entertainment figures.

Outside broadcast work, Grylls has authored several books. His early titles recount expeditions such as climbing Everest and crossing frozen seas, while later books cover survival techniques and an autobiography released in 2012. He has combined his public profile with roles as a motivational speaker and businessman, and holds honorary ranks in reserve services, including lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Reserve and, later, honorary lieutenant colonel in the Royal Marines Reserve.

Public profile

Grylls has been active in youth and charitable causes. He was appointed the youngest-ever Chief Scout in the United Kingdom in 2009. He serves as an ambassador for The Prince's Trust and is vice president of the JoLt Trust, which takes disadvantaged young people on challenging expeditions. In 2019 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to people, charity and media.

His television work has sometimes attracted criticism for staged or manipulated scenes, and Man vs. Wild in particular prompted debate about how certain sequences were presented. Nonetheless, his programs have enjoyed wide international reach and high-profile televised collaborations, including an Alaska appearance with President Barack Obama and a Running Wild episode that featured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.

Personal life

Grylls is married to Shara Cannings Knight; the couple married in 2000 and have three sons. His father, Michael Grylls, was a politician and his mother is Sarah Grylls. He has one sister, Lara Fawcett. Grylls describes himself as a practicing Christian and has said his faith plays a central role in his life. He maintains residences that include a narrowboat on the River Thames and a home on Saint Tudwal's Island off the Ll17n Peninsula in North Wales.

Grylls survived a serious freefall parachuting accident in Zambia in 1996 that injured several vertebrae but did not end his adventuring career. His tastes and hobbies include mountaineering, karate, swimming, playing the piano and writing. He is known to be non-vegetarian and lists simple foods such as eggs and fruit among favorites.

Latest updates

In recent years Grylls continued to present survival-related programming and to host prominent guests on Running Wild with Bear Grylls. In 2013 he received an honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Royal Marines Reserve. His television output includes more than 70 episodes of Man vs. Wild and numerous specials and spin-offs, and he remains active as a public figure, campaigner and speaker.
