Early life and backgroundBenita Jane Alexander-Noel was born on April 21, 1966, in Huntington Woods, Michigan. She grew up in that community and later attended Wayne State University in Michigan, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. Her father worked as a nuclear physicist and analyst and her mother worked as an art teacher.
Career
Alexander began building a career in television journalism and documentary production in the late 1990s. She joined Dateline NBC in March 1998 in New York, producing a wide range of stories and specials that included investigative reporting, crime and consumer stories, breaking news and celebrity profiles. Her Dateline work encompassed coverage of major events such as the September 11 attacks and contributed to multi-part specials including Inside the White House and a 10th-anniversary remembrance of 9/11.
Her reporting and production work earned recognition at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards. In 2002 she was part of a Dateline NBC episode that won a Best Report in a News Magazine Award, and in 2010 she received an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft for writing on the documentary series Inside the Obama White House.
