Early life and background

Benjamin Joseph Levin, known professionally as Benny Blanco, was born on March 8, 1988, in Reston, Virginia. He grew up in a household where music became a lifelong pursuit from an early age. As a child he began making beats and recording at home, and by his preteen years he had already won a songwriting contest and attracted industry attention. Blanco spent time at Camp Airy in Thurmont, Maryland, where he performed frequently and hosted a radio program under a childhood nickname.

His parents are Andrew Mark Levin and Sandra Beth. Blanco comes from a Jewish family and later moved to New York to further his craft, attending the Institute of Audio Research. During his teens he interned with producer Disco D, commuting between Virginia and Brooklyn while honing production and songwriting skills.

Career

Blanco’s professional career developed through early mentorship and studio work. He worked with producer Dr. Luke at Kasz Money Productions and co-produced several high-profile pop records in the late 2000s. Those collaborations included major singles that helped establish his reputation as a hitmaker, and he moved into independent work in 2011, contributing to songs such as Maroon 5’s "Moves Like Jagger" and producing across pop and hip-hop projects.

In 2007 he released an EP with Spank Rock that drew attention from music press. He co-wrote and co-produced Britney Spears’ 2008 single "Circus," a global commercial success. Over the following years Blanco continued to write and produce for a wide range of artists and accrued numerous industry honors and nominations.

Blanco released his debut single as a credited artist, "Eastside," in 2018, featuring Halsey and Khalid; the song reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and became an international hit. That year he also released other collaborations, including "Better to Lie" and "Roses." In 2019 he participated in the collaborative project "I Found You / Nilda’s Story," a music video and single created to raise support for an initiative assisting asylum seekers in the United States. He followed that with further singles and music videos featuring notable artists.

As an artist and producer Blanco has been credited on dozens of hit records and has had recurring success on radio and international charts. He released his debut studio album Friends Keep Secrets in 2018 and later issued a deluxe package, Friends Keep Secrets 2, in March 2021; that release achieved RIAA platinum certification on its first day. He has also co-written and produced for major albums that received multiple Grammy nominations across the 2010s and early 2020s.

Blanco and Matty Matheson were also featured together on a Vogue cover in March 2020.
