Bhaichung Bhutia Biography
Bhaichung Bhutia, often called the Sikkimese Sniper, is one of India's most celebrated footballers. A striker known for his scoring instinct and leadership
Early life and backgroundBhaichung Bhutia was born on 15 December 1976 in Tinkitam, a village in Sikkim, India. He grew up in the region and attended St. Xaviers School in Pakyong, East Sikkim. Football entered his life at an early age: he trained at Tashi Namgyal Academy and later with the SAI Gangtok program. His uncle Karma Bhutia served as an early coach and mentor, and at 14 he joined a local boys club in Gangtok where his uncle was chief coach. Bhutia first gained wider attention after being named best player at the 1992 Subroto Cup, which helped pave the way for his move into Calcutta football.
Career
Bhutia began his professional club career with East Bengal in 1993 and went on to become a prolific striker in Indian football. He made his international debut for India on 10 March 1995 against Thailand and earned the distinction of being India’s most capped player. Over a long international career he captained India to multiple regional titles, including three SAFF Championships, two Nehru Cup wins (2007 and 2009), the LG Cup in Vietnam in 2002, and the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which qualified India for the 2011 Asian Cup.
At club level, Bhutia played for several prominent Indian teams and enjoyed notable individual successes. In the 1996–97 season with JCT FC he finished as the top scorer, and in 1996 he was named Indian Player of the Year. Back at East Bengal in 1997 he produced a career-defining performance when he scored a hat-trick against Mohun Bagan. In the 2005–06 National Football League season he was recognised by the All India Football Federation as Player of the NFL. He has won nearly every domestic trophy with East Bengal, including the National Football League title in 2003–04.
Bhutia also had the rare experience of playing in Europe: in the summer of 1999 he signed for English club Bury FC, becoming the second Indian to join a European club, and on 15 April 2000 he became the first Asian player to score in an English professional game. He wore the number 15 jersey through much of his career and played primarily as a right-footed striker. His club retirement came in 2015; he announced his international retirement on 24 August 2011 and was honoured with a farewell match against Bayern Munich in 2012.
Beyond playing and coaching
Bhutia extended his influence off the pitch as well. He founded the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools in Delhi on 28 October 2010 in partnership with Carlos Queiroz and Nike to develop grassroots talent. In November 2012 he took on the role of interim manager at United Sikkim, a club he established, and in January 2018 he was appointed manager of Sikkim. He also briefly managed United Sikkim in 2012.
Public profile
Bhutia has been recognised with some of India’s highest sporting honours. He received the Arjuna Award in 1998 and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2008. In 2014 he was conferred the Banga Bhushan. His popularity extended beyond sport: in 2009 he participated in and won the celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He has been open about supporting causes as well; in 2008 he declined to carry the Olympic torch in India to express solidarity with the Tibetan people, a decision he described as a personal stand rather than an endorsement of violence.
Personal life
Bhutia married Madhuri Tipnis on 30 December 2004 in his native village of Tinkitam. The couple have a son, Ugen Kalzang Bhutia, and two daughters, Samara Dechen Bhutia and Keisha Dolkar Bhutia. The marriage ended in divorce in 2015. His parents are Dorji Dorma and Sonam Topden; he has siblings Bom Bom Bhutia, Chewang Bhutia and a sister named Cali.

He returned to East Bengal for a final half-season contract on 12 February 2015 before retiring from professional football. In 2011 he survived the Sikkim earthquake; although unhurt, his United Sikkim offices were destroyed and he later helped raise funds for victims.
Style and legacy
