Early life and background

Bhairon Singh Rathore was born in 1941 in Solankiya Tala village in the Shergarh district of the Princely State of Jodhpur, British India (now part of Jodhpur, Rajasthan). He came from a Rajput family and spent his life closely tied to his hometown of Solankiya Tala.

Career

Bhairon Singh enlisted in the Border Security Force (BSF) as a constable in 1963 and served until his retirement in 1987. Over the course of his service he rose to the rank of Naik.

He is best remembered for his actions during the Battle of Longewala in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. By that time he was serving as a Lance Naik attached to the Delta Company of the BSF’s 14th Battalion and was later attached to the army’s Alpha Company because of his detailed knowledge of the Longewala area. On the night of 4 December 1971 Longewala came under a major attack by a Pakistani brigade that included tanks and infantry. When a soldier of the 23 Punjab regiment manning a light machine gun was killed, Bhairon Singh took over the weapon and continued to fire through the fighting until dawn. His actions helped inflict heavy casualties on the attacking force and provided a rallying example for his comrades until Indian Air Force strikes the next morning turned the tide of the engagement.

For his conduct Bhairon Singh was awarded the Sena Medal by the Government of India in 1972. He continued to serve in the BSF after the war and completed a full career, retiring with the rank of Naik in 1987.

Public profile

Bhairon Singh’s wartime role reached a wider audience when he was portrayed on screen in the 1997 Bollywood film Border. Actor Suniel Shetty played Bhairon Singh in the movie. In later comments to the media, Bhairon Singh said he was unhappy with some factual inaccuracies in the film’s depiction of events, while acknowledging that at least one portrayed moment corresponded to what had actually happened.

Personal life

Bhairon Singh married Prem Kanwar in 1973. The couple had two children: a son, Sawai Singh, and a daughter. By religion he practiced Hinduism. At the time of his death he was a widower. As of December 2020 he was receiving a pension of Rs 12,500 and owned about 15.6 acres of agricultural land.

Later years and death

Into his later years Bhairon Singh maintained a disciplined routine and practiced yoga every morning. He suffered a paralytic attack on 14 December 2022 and was admitted to AIIMS, Jodhpur. He died there on 19 December 2022 at the age of 81 after suffering a brain stroke. His passing prompted public condolences from political leaders and personalities.
