Early life and backgroundBhajan Lal Sharma was born on 15 December 1967 in the village of Atari, Nadbai in Bharatpur district, Rajasthan. He completed his early schooling in local government schools — primary education in Atari, higher secondary studies in Gagwana, and senior secondary at the Government Higher Secondary School in Nadbai. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from SS Jain Subodh College, Jaipur, and a Master of Arts in Political Science from Rajasthan University, earned in 1993.
Sharma grew up in a family headed by his parents, Kishan Swaroop Sharma and Gomati Devi. He is married to Geeta Sharma since 1997 and has two sons, Abhishek and Kunal. He lists traveling, reading and cycling among his personal interests.
Career
Sharma’s political engagement began in student politics. While still in school he became involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Early roles included district co-convener and co-zila pramukh of the ABVP in Bharatpur. In the 1990s he was active in national ABVP campaigns and demonstrations that led to his arrest on at least two occasions.
At age 27 he joined the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and served as sarpanch of his native village for two consecutive terms. He later served as a Panchayat Samiti member and rose through BJYM ranks, including a three-time term as BJYM Bharatpur district president. He subsequently became Bharatpur district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and moved into senior party positions at the state level, serving as district president, state vice-president and a state general secretary in charge of the party headquarters.
Sharma also contested elections prior to his breakthrough at the state level. In the 2003 Rajasthan Assembly election he ran from Nadbai on the Rajasthan Samajik Nyay Manch ticket and received a portion of the vote, finishing fifth in that race. Over time he continued to build his profile within the BJP and was serving as the party’s General Secretary in Rajasthan for multiple terms.
In the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly election Sharma contested from the Sanganer constituency in Jaipur as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. He won that contest decisively, defeating his Indian National Congress opponent by a margin of more than 48,000 votes. Following the election, the BJP Legislature Party selected him as the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan on 15 December 2023. Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa were appointed as his deputies in the new administration.
Public profile
Sharma’s rise to the state’s top executive role followed decades of organizational work in student and youth politics and service within the BJP’s district and state structures. He is identified with the Brahmin community and is known for a modest personal style; family members have described simple daily habits such as cycling and traditional foods.
After his appointment as chief minister, an old campaign video resurfaced showing Sharma adopting a persona inspired by popular film imagery. The clip drew attention on social media and led to commentary from political figures and online users alike.
