Early life and background

Bhakti Kulkarni was born on 19 May 1992 in Goa, India. She grew up in Goa and showed an early interest in chess, beginning to play at about two-and-a-half years old. Her father introduced her to the game during his own college days, and Kulkarni credits those early lessons with setting the foundation for her chess career.

As a youngster she succeeded quickly in competitive events. By age six she had won the State Under‑7 Championship and earned selection for the national stage. Success in junior national competitions followed, and she continued to represent her state and country at age‑group events.

Kulkarni attended Mumbai University and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2022.

Career

Kulkarni’s trajectory through junior and senior chess saw a steady accumulation of titles and international results. She won the Asian under‑18 gold in China in 2010 and claimed the Asian Junior Chess Championship title in 2011. She also competed successfully in online events, claiming a gold in the Online Chess Olympiad in 2020. In September 2021 her FIDE rating was recorded at 2388.
